The latest major version of WordPress, 4.4, is due to be released next Tuesday, December 8th. It’s considered a major upgrade so it isn’t automatically applied. All Barrel Roll members will have their sites upgraded by our team within a few days of the release of WordPress 4.4. That’s one less thing they have to worry about! Here is what’s new:
- Twenty Sixteen, the newest default WordPress theme, will be included. It’s a minimalist, responsive design that’s not a huge departure from previous iterations.
- Responsive images. WordPress will now automatically delivers the most appropriate images based on your screen size and resolution. It’s based on the RICG Responsive Images Plugin and should make a significant difference in performance, especially for mobile devices. It does have the potential to cause some issues though; it may choose an image size you don’t agree with which could alter carefully designed layouts. We recommend testing your site thoroughly on different types of devices after the upgrade.
- Expanded embed compatibility. Now all sites that use the oEmbed standard will be supported, including YouTube, Flickr, Twitter, and others that were already integrated in to previous builds of WordPress. That means you’ll be able to embed other WordPress content in your posts/pages without using a plugin!
- Other stuff for developers. 🙂
